Charlotte Temple Mrs Susanna Haswell Rowson 9781469994789 Books

This printing of Charlotte Temple is a large, 8 x 10 format that I dislike. I expected a regular size paperback, 5 x 8 or something along those lines. I guess it's my own fault for not looking at the details of the item before ordering, and just assuming... But Amazon is awfully good about it - refunded my money and told me I don't need to send it back. Can't do much better than that.

Anyway, the print appears fine, and the paper and cover are decent quality. If you don't mind the big floppy format this book should be fine.

I haven't read the book yet, but a quick perusal shows that it's written in stilted, high-falutin' language - not surprising for a novel of its time, and not meant as a criticism. It's a classic, something that was known to "everybody" in its day, and I'll be reading it for its historical significance, not for pleasure today.

Just don't like the big page format of this printing.

It's a morality play. No story to speak of. No characters beyond "this man is Evil" or "this woman is Greed."
I gave it 3 stars not because it was horribly written but because I didn't particularly enjoy the story. A warning for girls who deviate from society's ideas of marriage and family is clear in this tragic tale of love, deception, family, and a blossoming American literary culture.
I choose to read this book because susanna haswell rowson was mentioned in my history lesson. I found the book a very good read. I was able to get through it in just a few settings.
Considering the time it was written and published -- and the female author -- it is very well done. The apologetics by the author speak strongly of the era. Also valuable as an allegory about England and America. Our Classics Book Club had a good discussion
This was for American Lit and it is essentially was a scare tactic book to keep young women virgins back in the day.
Symbolism and superfluous critical whatnot aside, I loved this book even though the plot made me feel things I would rather not. If you want to care for a helpless protagonist and feel emotions of anger and despair for fictional forces while still enjoying a pleasant style of writing, read this book. Also, it is a very short story so the emotional trauma will be over before you know it.
I found this book to be easy to read..it was filled with identifiable characters. Even though it was written in the latter part of the 18th century, the lessons learned and the situations encountered are still present in today's society.Wonderful writer! This story added to me as a person and I am glad to have had the opportunity to have read it. I also sent a copy of it to my sister! A wise purchase!
